How to Choose the Best Inline Hockey Skates

How to Stop on Inline Hockey Skates

Never WANTING to stop skating feels great, but not being ABLE to come to a controlled stop will affect your performance in the game. Skaters new to inline skating should practice skating and stopping at slow speeds until stops become natural. But no need to ‘stop’ there; even seasoned players can work on mastering the stops they want.

The Plow Stop

The plow stop is the most common beginner stop. To perform this stop, players start from a wide stance. Staying low, they angle the front of their skates toward each other, forming a shape like the front of a plow or a slice of pizza. And while the ‘heel brake’ is a stop you might see mentioned for beginners, it’s not for inline hockey! Heel brakes add weight, interfere with turning, and they’re not used during gameplay, so you won’t find heel brakes on inline hockey skates.

Common Intermediate and Advanced Stops

More advanced skaters can add stops to their repertoire that will help game-time performance. Some of these differ slightly from ice hockey stops of the same name, but the positions are similar.

Tips: The Inline Hockey Stop

A lot of players find the hockey stop the toughest to perfect on inline skates. Here are some tips to keep in mind as you work toward achieving the hockey stop you crave. Every tip won’t help every player, so give these a try one at a time and see which work for you.

As you come into the stop, check that your stance is wide enough.
Bend your knees deeply.
Check that you have the right wheels for the surface.
To stop faster, try getting lower; turning more tightly; and putting more of your weight in your stopping leg.

How to Lace Inline Skates

Begin at the bottom and criss-cross your way up. After that, see what works best for your particular feet in your particular inline skates: If you’re looking for a way to keep the laces tight, try finishing at the top with lace locks or double-crosses. If you want to be able to flex forward more easily, leave the top eyelets unlaced.

When and How to Replace Inline Skate Bearings

In order for you to skate safely, your bearings must spin freely. Keep them clean, dry, and lubricated. If your bearings seize up while you’re moving, at best your performance will suffer, and at worst you will be injured.

Examine your skates regularly. You’ll know it’s time to replace your bearings…

How to Replace Inline Skate Bearings in Three Steps

It is easiest to do this using a multitool with an Allen wrench, a bearing pusher, and bearing puller.

Use the Allen wrench to remove the wheel from the skate.
There is one bearing on either side of the wheel. Bearings are removed differently depending on whether they’re mounted on a long-sleeve spacer or a floating spacer.

• For a long-sleeve spacer, 6 mm axles: Insert the bearing pusher into one side and push the bearing out the other side, into your hand. Remove the spacer. Flip the wheel and push the other bearing out the other side, into your hand.

• For a floating spacer, 8 mm axles: Insert the bearing puller about halfway and use it to pry out the bearing as you turn the wheel. Remove the spacer. Flip the wheel and using the bearing pusher to push the other bearing out the other side, into your hand.

Put the new bearing—or the cleaned original bearing—on a flat surface. Press the wheel down onto it. Insert the spacer, flip the wheel, and insert the second bearing on the other side.

When and How to Replace Inline Skate Wheels

Skate wheels don’t last forever, but you can extend their life by rotating them. On Hi-Lo hockey skates, the wheels in the back are larger than those in front, so you can swap the back wheels with each other and the front wheels with each other. Skate wheels tend to wear out on the inside edges, so it pays to flip them when you swap their positions so that a new side is now the inside edge.

Eventually, the wheels will need replacing. You’ll know it’s time to replace your wheels…

• If you see significant wear on both sides of the wheels.

• If you feel your skates are slower than they used to be, they’re difficult to skate on, or your skate doesn’t rest flat on the floor

How to Replace Inline Skate Wheels

Follow the directions above to remove the wheels from the skate and the bearings from the wheel.
Insert cleaned bearings and spacers or new bearings and spacers into the new wheel.
Use the Allen wrench to re-attach the wheel to the skate.
